Art Viewable From Space

From the slums of Kenya, an amazing sight:

Today, after more than a year of planning, 2000 square meters of rooftops have been covered with photos of the eyes and faces of the women of Kibera. The material used is water resistant so that the photo itself will protect the fragile houses in the heavy rain season. The train that passes on this line through Kibera at least twice a day has also been covered with eyes from the women that live below it. With the eyes on the train, the bottom half of the their faces have be pasted on corrugated sheets on the slope that leads down from the tracks to the rooftops. The idea being that for the split second the train passes, their eyes will match their smiles and their faces will be complete.

(An ordinary phone booth was transformed into an aquarium by artists Benoit Deseille and Benedetto Bufalino as part of the Lyon Light Festival in France)

"Why?" You may ask, the designers clue us in:

“With the advent of the mobile telephone, telephone booths lie unused. We rediscover this glass cage transformed into an aquarium, full of exotically coloured fish; an invitation to escape and travel.“

It is 1,474 megapixels big. You can zoom in on lapel buttons for as far as the eye can see. Seriously: amazing stuff. David Bergman made it out of 220 separate photos.

First Picture Ever.

(This photograph was only discovered in 2002 and is now known to be the very first permanent photograph ever taken by Nicéphore Niépce - the father of photography. Taken in 1825)

This is an image of an engraving of a man walking a horse and it was made using a technique known as heliogravure. The method involves a piece of copper covered with light sensitive bitumen. This metal plate is exposed to light and creates an image which is then transferred to paper. The image has been declared a national treasure by the French government and it sold for $392,000 at auction to the French National Library.

Light 'em Up

(Jenny Holzer’s “For the Guggenheim” Through December 31, 2008, Jenny Holzer’s “For the Guggenheim” will project on the side of the Manhattan museum. To mark the new restoration of the structure, the Guggenheim commissioned Holzer (one of the U.S. most celebrated projection artists) to immortalize the building. Her own words and poems suffuse the side of the great white spiral, making the building itself a conversation piece on the eve of its 50th anniversary celebration in 2009)
